Ho visto “La Tartaruga Rossa“, lungometraggio d’animazione di Dudok de Wit, circa un anno fa, ed è stato subito amore. (trailer)
Chi mi conosce sa che mi lamento sempre della mia pessima memoria, motivo per cui la memoria dei film che mi sono piaciuti spesso non è legata allo scorrere della narrazione, ma ad alcuni elementi stilistici, o ad alcune scene particolarmente efficaci.
Per un anno ho invitato gli amici ad andare a vedere il film promuovendolo come un capolavoro, quale è, ma di recente mi sono fermato ad interrogarmi: cosa mi è rimasto di questa pellicola? La prima risposta che mi balza alla mente è “il bel disegno”, ma a un’introspezione più profonda posso ricostruire che quello che mi è piaciuto è il gusto della composizione dell’inquadratura, fatta con pochi elementi e con un profondo senso dello spazio. Della storia ricordo che si tratta di una grande metafora della vita non priva di senso onirico. A questo punto ho deciso di rivedere il film per analizzarne gli aspetti che possono aver alimentato l’immagine che ho costudito dentro di me.
La pellicola è composta principalmente di campi medi, lunghi e lunghissimi, spesso ripresi con un’angolazione dall’alto: inquadrature che ricordano “Father and Daughter“, sempre di Dudok de Wit, vincitore del premio Oscar per il Miglior Cortometraggio Animato nel 2001. I personaggi si muovono come piccole figure in queste inquadrature alimentando di volta in volta un senso di solitudine, quando il protagonista approda sull’isola, di intimità, quando la tartaruga diventa donna, di condivisione, quando arriva il figlio. In queste inquadrature spesso domina un elemento naturale suggerito da pochi segni che ne determinano la texture (roccia, sabbia, acqua, cielo e foresta di bambù), e più di frequente i personaggi si muovono sui limiti determinati dall’incontro tra due di questi elementi: margini, confini tra sogno e realtà.
In questo stile generale le inquadrature ravvicinate assumono particolari significati. I dettagli, pochi, servono spesso a focalizzare l’attenzione sui piccoli esseri che popolano l’isola, nell’interazione col protagonista: vediamo granchi, tartarughe, insetti e pesci che si avvicinano a mani e piedi del naufrago, quasi a voler instaurare un contatto, una forma primitiva di socializzazione. Ci sono poi i dettagli che servono a mostrare un’azione: lei che apre una cozza per offrirne il contenuto a lui, il figlio che pulisce un pesce, le mani dei tre personaggi che in momenti diversi si ritrovano, intensificando il senso di quell’unità sociale minima, basata sulla condivisione e il senso di appartenenza, che è la famiglia.
Altre inquadrature ravvicinate mostrano principalmente dei piani americani che ci permettono di leggere meglio l’espressione dei visi dei protagonisti: paura, stanchezza, rabbia, stupore, pentimento e serenità si alternano, fino ad arrivare alla scena meglio riuscita in questo senso, il dialogo muto tra figlio e genitori nel momento in cui questi comunica la sua volontà di staccare il cordone ombelicale e lasciare l’isola per conoscere il mondo. Spesso queste inquadrature sono preludio di una soggettiva; ma le soggettive sono poche a dire il vero, forse per rimarcare il valore universale della storia attraverso inquadrature oggettive, esterne al protagonista.
Ma esterne quanto? Rivedendo il film ho notato un dettaglio tecnico che mi era sfuggito alla prima visione. Nella colonna sonora del film, per tutta la prima parte, sono presenti solo rumori, nessuna parola o musica. Solo nelle sequenze palesemente oniriche la musica fa la sua incursione, a un certo punto in forma diegetica quando il naufrago vede un quartetto suonare sulla spiaggia, quasi a dire che la musica può esistere solo nel mondo del sogno. Infatti la musica entra a pieno titolo a far parte del film dal momento della trasformazione della tartaruga in donna, fornendoci una chiave di lettura importante per tutta la seconda parte della pellicola: il bisogno del naufrago, o più in generale dell’uomo, di creare rapporti e relazioni per sfuggire all’isolamento.
Da qui il valore universale del racconto, la cui forma onirica è accentuata proprio dalla scelta di punti di vista esterni, lontani e ampi, dal tratto e dalla tavolozza cromatica essenziali. Ho detto la mia, amici di Cartùn, ora tocca a voi!
